Common rust

  • Cause: Puccinia sorghi
  • Environment: Favors high humidity with moderate temperatures, heavy dews and about six hours of leaf wetness
  • Timing: Typically found in June and July
  • Appearance: Commonly mistaken as Southern rust, scout for smaller, lighter pustules which typically only appear on the upper leaf surface and are more densely packed on the leaf.
  • Risk: Damage to leaf tissues
